24-26 Charles St.

24 & 26 Charles Street was built just prior to the beginning of the 20th century, and was one of the last of Saint John’s houses built in the italianate style. Previously a two family home, it now contains 4 apartments. The interior is entirely new as of 2012 including new windows (the original windows were removed by the previous owner), while the exterior consists of the original elements. The overhanging flat roof is lined by a decorative cornice, with the scrolled brackets and dentils so common on italianate buildings. We removed the man-made siding that was applied in the 1960’s and repainted the wooden exterior in a 3 colour scheme to accentuate the heritage features of this home. The entableture, also held up by scrolled brackets, over the front door is original. We had to rebuild most of the window pediments, but kept the original style.
On this quiet street, the apartments in this building also have a fantastic view. You are within one minute’s walk of a well maintained park and a gas-station/convenience store. Uptown Saint John is a five minute walk, and the highway, by car, is less than 2 minutes away!
