Fire Prevention Tips

Canadian statistics say that 8 people per week die in fires, and with recent news stories, figures like this seem more real. Winter can be the worst time for apartment fires so let’s talk about the hazards so we can all be a little safer.

Tenants:

Take some time to think about your escape route, should an emergency occur.

Regular testing of smoke detectors, and replacement of batteries (if smoke detectors aren’t direct wired) is imperative.

Get tenant insurance! If you’re new in town and aren’t sure where to get it, ask your landlord for advice.

Don’t smoke inside. If you must smoke inside your apartment, at LEAST make the bedroom a no-smoking area.

Avoid leaving the house with dryer running.  Always use and clean out lint tray.

When cooking, distractions are the killer. Never leave the stove unattended.

Use a thermostat controlled deep fryer rather than deep-frying on the stove. Never deep fry a turkey indoors.

Keep stovetop and oven clean, as grease and other debris ignites easily.

Keep paper towels and tea towels a metre away from your stove.

Have a pot lid or cookie sheet handy when cooking to cover (and distinguish) a pot when a flame appears. DO NOT move the pot while it is flaming.

Avoid using portable heaters, but if you do use them DO NOT use an extension cord with them. Also turn them off when you leave the room.

Get a power bar that has its own breaker/surge protector, and avoid overloading electrical outlets.

Advise your landlord of any flickering lights as this could be an electrical fire hazard. If a light bulb burns out often it is likely too high a wattage for the light fixture.

Electrical cords should not get hot; if hot the cord/device is under rated.

Wood burning fireplaces in Uptown Saint John are very charming, but most should not be operated due to their age, lack of maintenance and the potential they have been sealed off. Your landlord should know if the fire place is operational; if there are ANY hesitations, you should request the fireplace be inspected by a WETT certified technician before usage.

Landlords:

Ensure you provide an adequate means of escape to your tenants.

Remind tenants to test smoke detectors monthly. Ask for tenant’s agreement to NOT disable or remove them. Remember there should be one inside every sleeping area.

Check your self-closing doors to see if any adjustments are needed!

Get chimneys cleaned, and furnace checked by a technician annually.

Avoid keeping flammable materials in basements and attics. Don’t store gas or propane in the basement.

Does your fire insurance policy need to be reviewed or updated?

For tenants and landlords, local fire officials and city inspectors are a great resource and are always pleased to answer fire safety questions!
